Art Toy Design Week 2
Sculpting

In class last week, we used aluminum foil to prototype a version of our toy. It was effectively during this exercise that I came up with the concept for my toy: a cloud that can loom over things.

To turn this into a less soft and fuzzy structure, I started by trying to 3D print the bottom piece, the Empire State Building:

This was my first time laser cutting. It caught on fire because I had outlined all the raster components, and the laser kept going over the same regions at full power.

I fixed the problem and tried it again, and it did not catch on fire this time.

This felt a lot more substantial than the foil sculpture, but it was 2D, and that wasn't ideal. I considered cutting multiple pieces of cardboard such that they could interlock to form a 3D structure, but I realized that it might be faster to use the power tolls to sculpt wood instead.
