A common thing in computer UIs is to have drop shadows, to create the illusion of the screen having multiple layers. For this week's assignment, I decided to turn the layers into physical reality.
I started by creating a complex screenshot that could show off the layers.
It turned out to be quite complex to separate out the layers, so I created a simpler screenshot:
This one was a lot easier to separate into layers:
The material I used is white cardboard. Laser etching this material produces a similar effect to printing on a standard printer, since it removes the white paint to reveal the darker cardboard underneath:
I learned that raster printing takes a really long time! I'm glad I didn't go with the more complex image that had more layers.
